Sheffield Wednesday breezed to within a point of the play-off places with an entertaining victory over a wobbling Wolves.

Never judge a game by its wrapping.

The form table wasn't too festive - Wolves with one win in seven games and Wednesday without a victory in four.

Forestieri was on the scoresheet again just five minutes later to complete a quick first-half turnaround

But both went all out for the three points, the Owls especially with an ultra-attacking line-up effectively parading three strikers.

It ended in Wednesday's biggest league triumph of a season that still promises much.

But Wolves' slide is alarming for boss Kenny Jackett.

There were no half measures and Wednesday overturned Wolves' early lead in 10 minutes with two-goal Fernando Forestieri advancing to eight for the season.

Ambitious Hillsborough chairman Dejphon Chansiri, who had flown in for this match, certainly hasn't given up on promotion in his first season.

The Thai tuna tycoon financed 15 signings last summer and more are expected, albeit not on that scale, in January.

Head coach Carlos Carvalhal is being trusted to deliver despite the levelling off of a promising start.

The Portuguese appears to have won a major power battle behind the scenes with the departure of club advisor Glenn Roeder, with whom he was rumoured to have had a stormy relationship.

However, Carvalhal will be expected to keep the Owls at least in touch with the top six.

Roeder's sudden departure last week was evidence of Chansiri's ruthless streak.

The former West Ham and Newcastle boss was the third boardroom advisor to be kicked out since Chansiri assembled a now defunct transfer committee last summer. An original member, Adam Pearson, had already left for a short stay with Leeds before the season began.

Wolves put an early clamp on Wednesday's desire to play from the back and forced a penalty, albeit a soft one, when Matt Doherty fell under Ross Wallace's ill-judged challenge.

Benik Afobe coolly collected his tenth goal of the season. Wednesday's equaliser just four minutes later was a leveller in every sense.

Lucas Joao appeared to be pulled back after bursting through the centre of the visitor's defence.

Once referee Mark Brown pointed to the spot a red card should have followed. But the officials must have been undecided on who denied the scoring opportunity & Wolves' punishment was confined to Forestieri scoring from the spot.

Wednesday's £3m signing from Watford then hammered his team in front with the aid of a deflection after Joao had again unhinged Wolves' defence.

After Nathan Byrne wasted a chance to level, Joao was twice denied by Carl Ikeme, who tipped the striker's fierce shot onto the bar.

Daniel Pudil put the result beyond doubt with the goal of the game. The left back popped up on the edge of the area to curl a beauty into the top corner.

Forestieri wasted a glorious chance for his hat-trick while Wolves' pursuit of a comeback goal kept it end-to-end stuff.

Gary Hooper confirmed the Owls' biggest league triumph of the season by scoring for the second game running in opening his account on loan from Norwich.
