Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is capable of managing his old club Chelsea, according to the chairman who has just lost his services.

Ben Robinson witnessed first-hand the skills which saw Hasselbaink achieve astonishing success at Burton Albion and convince Queens Park Rangers to move for the former Dutch international.

Hasselbaink got Burton promoted from League Two and left for Loftus Road with the club top of League One. Burton chairman Robinson believes the 43-year-old is destined for the very top and argued Chelsea, the club where Hasselbaink has hero status, should make a move.

As Hasselbaink was unveiled at QPR,  Burton chairman Ben Robinson claimed he is destined for the top

‘He can manage whatever club, right to the top,’ said Robinson. ‘If I was chairman of Chelsea I would get Jimmy in. Assuming they wanted to get rid of Jose Mourinho. I am not saying sack him.

‘But if the position became available then, yes. He is a very astute, clever guy. His training is different, his methodology is incredible.

‘His win ratio here was 64 per cent. That was no fluke. We would go goals behind but still come back and win, because of his motivation and substitutions.

‘He is a strong guy; you have a debate with him and, wow, you come out bruised. He has got tremendous self-belief.’

Robinson, 70, has a track record of appointing successful managers with Neil Warnock and Gary Rowett going on to bigger things from Burton. Nigel Clough has come back to Burton having begun his managerial career at the club.

Hasselbaink’s stock is high right now. ‘When you meet Jimmy for the first time that wonderful smile warms up a room,’ added Robinson. ‘He has so many abilities – he is a great man manager, he has nurtured our players and brought them on, and he has a great work ethic.

‘He has deep understanding of the game and can convey that to players. And he has a great sense of humour.’

Hasselbaink has improved his salary considerably by taking the QPR job. ‘When he left he would have been the lowest paid manager in League One, trust me,’ said Robinson. ‘He didn’t go for the money, it was the right career move, but he has increased his income tenfold. He’ll succeed there providing he suffers no interference.’
